Longtime Del Norte resident Lela May Pierce, 88, passed away on May 30, 2023. She was born on a ranch 5 miles west of Del Norte, Colo., on April 4, 1935, to Paul E. and Sarah Frances (Love) Weaver.

She married Alfred Laverne Pierce on Feb. 3, 1958. The two had been together for 65 years. Lela May was a Registered Nurse and loved helping people. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and held numerous positions in the church. She was a member of the Columbine Girls State Dept. and served as a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader. Lela May loved to do family history work, crochet, sewing, knitting, and reading.

She is survived by her husband Alfred L. Pierce, her children, Cynthia Wojciechowicz of Monte Vista, Colo., Eric (Stephanie) Pierce of Del Norte, Colo., Gloria Harris of Del Norte, Martha (Steven) Jeffries of Cushing, Texas, Josephine (Shane) Pierce-Carr of Niarada, Mont., and Elizabeth Hutches of Holyoke, Colo., 17 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, her siblings, Robert Weaver of Humble, Texas, Hazel Potter of South Fork, Pauline Cox of Colorado Springs, Colo., Rosalind Weaver of Del Norte, Butch Weaver of Del Norte, Steven Weaver of Alamosa, Dale Weaver of Del Norte and Kent Weaver of Alamosa as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Lela May was preceded in death by her parents, her children Mark Pierce, Albert Samuel and Samarah Majella and her siblings, Eileen Coombs, James Weaver, John Weaver, Howard Weaver and Stanley David Weaver.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at the Del Norte Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. A visitation will be held from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at the church prior to the service. Interment will follow services in the Del Norte Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the Church’s Disaster Relief Fund and may be made in care of the funeral home office.
