Alamosa wins twice at home tri-meet

Lady Moose defeat Hoehne, Gunnison

ALAMOSA – The Alamosa High School volleyball team hosted a tri-meet with Centauri, Gunnison and Hoehne Saturday at the AHS gym.

The Lady Mean Moose were very successful on their home court as they defeated Hoehne and sixth-ranked and previously undefeated Gunnison both in straight sets.

“The girls played well,” said Alamosa coach Annie Mortensen. “We’re going to get better every practice, every game and every set. I think they did that.”

The Lady Falcons swept Hoehne but lost in four sets to Gunnison.

“We’re going to keep working, keep fighting and getting back up there,” said Centauri coach Ali Miller.

The first match of the day featured the Lady Falcons and the Lady Farmers. Centauri took an early 10-6 lead in the first set, but Hoehne rallied to take a 12-11 lead.

But the Lady Falcons dominated the rest of the way, winning the first set 25-16.

Centauri took a 6-3 lead to open the second set, but Hoehne came back to take a 10-7 advantage. The Lady Falcons tied the score at 11-11, but the Lady Farmers took a 20-15 lead.

Centauri finished finished the set with a 10-3 run to take a 25-23 victory.

The Lady Falcons had a 5-1 lead early in the third set, but the Lady Farmers tied the score at 9-9. Centauri regained the lead at 14-10, but Hoehne rallied to cut its deficit to 15-13.

The Lady Falcons finished with a 10-7 run for a 25-20 win.

Centauri was led by freshman setter Aubree Ullery with 37 assists. Kynlei Curits led in kills with 11, followed by Mikasa Gilleland and Rylie McCarroll both with eight, and Joselyn McCarroll and Denver Holman both with seven. Rylie McCarroll led in service aces with five.

The Lady Mean Moose dominated from start to finish in the first set as they won by a score of 25-8.

Alamosa took a 12-4 lead to open the second set, but Hoehne recovered and cut the lead to 19-17. The Lady Mean Moose outscored the Lady Farmers 6-3 to finish the set and take a 25-20 victory.

Alamosa took a 7-3 lead in the third set, but Hoehne closed to within 7-5. The Lady Mean Moose then went on a 13-2 run for a 20-7 advantage, and they rode that momentum to a 25-11 win.

Morgan Ortega led the offense with 30 assists. Jaelin Garcia led in kills with nine, followed by Ortega and Aubrey Rothermich with eight, Taybor Wiedeman with seven, Kadie Hawkins with six, and Lily Heersink with five. Ortega also led in aces with five, and Wiedeman and Garcia both had two.

Gunnison def. Centauri

The Lady Falcons took a 5-2 lead to begin the first set. They eventually increased the lead to 21-17, but the Cowboys rallied to close within 24-21. Rylie McCarroll’s kill gave Centauri the win 25-22.

The Lady Falcons claimed a 9-3 lead to begin the second set, but the Cowboys ran off eight straight points for an 11-9 edge. Gunnison pushed the lead to 19-14, but Centauri came back to within a 19-18 deficit.

The Cowboys won the set 25-23.

Gunnison got off to a fast start in the third set as it led 13-2. It led 18-4 before Centauri came back to narrow the gap to 21-15.

The Cowboys, however, scored the final four points for a 25-15 win.

Gunnison again had a strong start in the fourth set as it led 13-5. Centauri came back to within 17-12, but the Cowboys had an 8-1 finish and took the victory 25-13.

Ullery again led Centauri with 24 assists. Rylie McCarroll led in kills with 10, followed by Joselyn McCarroll with seven, and Holman with five. Holman led in aces with five, and Ullery, Joselyn McCarroll and Gilleland each had two.

The Lady Mean Moose took a 10-3 lead to begin the first set, but the Cowboys closed to within 11-7. Alamosa had a 14-4 finish to the set for a 25-11 win.

The Lady Mean Moose took a 4-2 lead early in the second set, but the Cowboys took the lead at 13-7. Alamosa then scored seven straight points for a 14-13 edge, but Gunnison came back to lead 20-19. The Lady Moose scored the final six points of the set for a 25-20 v ictory.

Alamosa took a 6-2 lead to open the third set, but Gunnison rallied to take a 9-8 edge. The Lady Mean Moose regained the lead at 14-10, and they outscored the Cowboys 11-6 to finish the set and took a 25-16 win.

Ortega had 23 assists to lead the Lady Mean Moose. Rothermich led in kills with 13, followed by Ortega and Garcia both with 11. Ortega and Rice led in aces with four apiece.

What’s next

Alamosa (9-2, 2-0) and Centauri (3-5, 0-0) will meet on the Lady Falcons’ home court on Tuesday. The first match of the evening starts at 4:30 p.m.

“That is a highly emotional game,” Mortensen said. “We’re going to work hard at playing our game, andour goal is definitely to beat them.”

“It will be a good game,” Miller said.
