DEL NORTE — The Upper Rio Grande School District theme school sounded out on the air Thursday afternoon, Sept. 22, as the elementary school headed off the 2022 homecoming parade donning banners and a good healthy dose of school spirit.

Their voices brought cheers of school pride from the attending crowd and fellow students.

The remainder of the school followed in their footsteps along Grand Avenue, bringing with them even more enthusiasm from the crowd. The community came out in full support of the district and the students, showing their dedication to the school. The parade featured all of this year’s Del Norte High School royalty nominations and the Del Norte Tigers football team rallied their forces for the coming game against Salida.

That evening, students showed off their many talents at the annual Tiger Rags talent show. This event has been a long-standing tradition at the school but hasn’t been able to happen due to COVID precautions.

“It was really great to see the community and to welcome this event back to the stage,” said URGSD Superintendent Aaron Horrocks.

Between dressing up for different themes throughout the week, cheering on both football and volleyball home games and then bringing out the fancy digs for the homecoming dance, the district had a wonderful time for their homecoming celebrations.

Newly appointed Athletic Director Gilbert Sanchez was proud of how all the athletes turned out for the end-of-week games. Students worked hard the past few months to prepare for the games and it showed in the dedication and competition displayed on the field and on the court.

The football game Friday night between the Tigers and Salida was energetic and competitive with crowds cheering on the home team. The new football field was lit with lights as the game lasted well into the evening. Salida won 54-13 but that did not dampen the school spirit.

On Thursday evening during the Tiger Rags talent show, Michael Laymon was announced as Homecoming King and Deanna Ingham was announced as Homecoming Queen.
