Rio Grande County closed their polls at 7 p.m. on Super Tuesday and judges immediately got down to counting 3,618 ballots that were mostly mail-in.
The results are as follows, for the Democratic Party Presidential Candidate Senator Bernie Sanders swept in to take the lead with 478 votes, followed by Michael Bloomberg with 317 votes. “We had a really great turnout for the county. It was the biggest voter turnout we have seen in a long time and it was interesting to have 17-year old voters coming in to do their part, as long as they turned 18 by the November election, they could vote this year,” said one of the Judges hired by the county to help count ballots.
Cindy Hill, Rio Grande County Clerk stated that 73 people came to the polling location throughout the day on Tuesday to cast their vote rather than mail it in. “I like having the polling station for all precincts in the county in one place. Before we had to have 15 polling locations and three judges per location. Not only was handling that difficult it was also hard to find enough people qualified to fill those positions.”
The night ended without any difficulties and preliminary counts were in by 9 p.m.
