DEL NORTE— Throughout the month of May, the Rio Grande County Museum will showcase local art in addition to hosting other historic celebrations.
Starting on Tuesday, April 30, a show featuring student artwork from the Upper Rio Grande School District will run until May 12. Artists and teachers will host a full-day opening reception in the museum’s Gallery Room on Wednesday, May 1.
Offering art for all ages in the district, Elementary Art Teacher Susan Carrasco teams with Junior High Art and Senior High Art Studio teacher Gina Randolph to develop skills and techniques. The show will include works in different media from different classes.
Two days after the student show comes down, sculptor Darwin Thompson will exhibit “Traders and Trappers” for two weeks (May 14-28). Thompson’s depictions of frontier life and hard work will coincide with the museum’s larger exhibit entitled “Trails, Traders and Trappers.”
On May 18, the museum impersonating an art gallery will also emphasize its library features. Running a “Day with the Museum Staff,” volunteers and directors will begin private tours of the inner workings in the building. The materials contain unique historical accounts, capturing local scenes from previous centuries.
To honor Armed Forces Day on the afternoon of May 18, Mikayla Baird will give a presentation about United States Civil War Veterans who came to Rio Grande County after the battles ended and the country focused on rebuilding itself (and a transcontinental railroad). Honoring World War I veterans, Baird will give a second presentation and be available to answer questions.
