Oktoberfest brings out fun for community

DEL NORTE— A large crowd gathered on Columbia Avenue in Del Norte for the third annual Del Norte Oktoberfest on Friday, Sept. 21.
The evening began as vendors and local businesses like Three Barrel Brewing Company set up along the end of the street between the Windsor Hotel and High Valley Community Center (HVCC). Vendors offered homemade wares, and fun activities were set up for people to enjoy as the evening turned into night.
HVCC has worked closely with the chamber over the last two years to turn the event into a more family-friendly atmosphere, hoping to bring more people out to enjoy one last hoorah before winter sets in. Last year, the event was a huge success with live entertainment, local vendors and delicious food provided by local restaurants. “We were really pleased how last year went. More families came out to have a good time and we were able to make it a more family-friendly atmosphere,” said HVCC Program Coordinator Kathryn Trujillo.
This year, the event was similar with only a few changes made by HVCC, who opened up their playground area for both children and families to enjoy. In addition to the playground, the center also set up a life-size version of the game Connect Four, which was a hit. Children and parents gathered around the game and had friendly competitions, one after the other throughout the entire night.
The center also provided food, with proceeds going to future events for both the center and the chamber. Students from the center helped prepare nachos, pork tacos and other treats which were enjoyed by all. Three Barrel Brewing Company supplied locally brewed beer and other beverages while families gathered around picnic tables set up in front of a large stage.
Though the band scheduled to play for the evening was unable to show, the Del Norte community was ready to have a great time. A local musician set up on stage and played some tunes until Stan Montoya with Right Beat DJ services showed up and took over for the rest of the evening. “The chamber was beyond thankful for the support of the community. It really showed how much this community can work together,” said Chamber Assistant Director Adrienne Atencio.
The night wore on with people dancing, laughing and really having a great time. “This was by far the best year yet, and we can only hope that we can continue to bring people out for future events. This was the most successful Oktoberfest to date,” said Atencio.
Now, as fall wears away to winter, the chamber is in the midst of planning for the annual Parade of Lights that will take place at the beginning of December.
