Rio Grande County announces preliminary election results

DEL NORTE— Preliminary results came in for the 2018 Rio Grande County election just after 8 p.m. There were 35 local contests being voted on for the election with several focused in Rio Grande County.
Unofficial results are as follows: John Noffsker won unopposed for Rio Grande County Commissioner for District 2, taking the place of previous Commissioner Karla Shriver after having won the preliminary elections in June.
Cindy Hill was unopposed for Rio Grande County Clerk and Recorder, as was Cherilyn Rue for Rio Grande County Treasurer. JJ Mondragon will continue to serve as Rio Grande County Assessor having won the preliminary elections in June.
In the race for Rio Grande County Sherriff, Don McDonald, South Fork police chief won unopposed in June and is the unofficial winner of the November election with 2,380 votes; write-in candidate Brian Norton received 1,877 votes. A third write-in Susan Christine Wolfrey received two votes. Stephen Hunzeker was unopposed as Rio Grande County Coroner.
The Town of Del Norte had a ballot issue as part of the coordinated election with Rio Grande County proposing a two to four percent sales tax increase that was shot down in the preliminary results with a vote of 458 against and 171 for the increase.
There were 5,019 ballots cast in Rio Grande County out of 8,049 registered voters.
