Local organizations partner to paint D Mountain

DEL NORTE— After several weeks of planning and fundraising efforts of many local organizations working together, the Del Norte School District was pleased to announce that they will be working with the Knights of Columbus, Del Norte Bank and the senior class to paint the infamous “D” on D Mountain.
“We were approached by the Knights of Columbus in mid-summer who wanted to do a community project that involved the school. Steve Nicolais helped get this project off of the ground and we can’t be more excited,” said Superintendent Chris Burr.
The “D” painted on the side of the mountain hovering over Del Norte has been a staple for a long time. Now through the generous efforts of several community members, business owners, the Knights of Columbus and Del Norte Bank the plan to have it repainted before homecoming will come true.
“We plan on inviting anyone who wants to come out and get their hands dirty to join us once we have a time and date set. We will be using a pressure painter we use to paint the football field, so hard labor is not what we need, but community support would make it even more fun,” stated Burr.
“Athletic Director Richie Madrid has asked the seniors to come out and join us when we go up to paint. We wanted to give them the opportunity to do something like this for their senior year. Everyone is welcome to come though, it’s not just for the seniors,” explained Burr.
Burr plans to announce the date and time for the painting in the next few days. “We are just really thrilled that people stepped up and made donations at the Del Norte Bank and that we will have another opportunity to refurbish something that makes our town what it is.”
“The ‘D’ is our most important landmark and we’re excited to get it spruced up. What a great community effort and a huge thanks needs to go out to Steve who put the project together,” said Del Norte Bank President Mike Hurst.
Homecoming is the week of Sept. 17 and the hope is to have the project completed by then.
