James Lee Swanson, 69

MONTE VISTA— Longtime San Luis Valley resident James Lee Swanson, 69, passed away on Jan. 18, 2019. He was born on June 25, 1949 in Englewood, Colo. to Harold J. and Jeanne May Swanson.
He honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged from the Army in September of 1972. James was a farmer and rancher in the San Luis Valley for most of his life, as well as a Saguache County Water Commissioner for 13 years. He was a member of the Feed Store Church. He enjoyed riding horses, caring for his cattle and pigs, hunting, fishing and camping. He especially loved being with his family and spending time with his grandkids.
He is survived by his mother Jeanne Swanson of Cedaredge, Colo.; his children, Jamie Laster of Alamosa, Jana Swanson of Monte Vista and Joni (Robbie) Stockebrand of Alamosa; his grandchildren, Chandler Swanson, Braidynn Leeson, Jordan Leeson, Libby Stockebrand, Austin Stockebrand, Rebekah Stockebrand and Mollie Stockebrand as well as his sister Julie (Fred) McKee of Cedaredge, Colo. along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
James was preceded in death by his father.
Cremation was selected and a memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 25, 2019 at the Feed Store Church near Monte Vista. Inurnment with military honors will follow the service in the Del Norte Cemetery. Contributions are suggested to Hospice Del Valle and may be made in care of the funeral home office.
