HVCC plans for community night, fall activities

DEL NORTE- High Valley Community Center has been busy over the last two months and are looking forward to even more activities and community involvement in coming weeks. The center is working with the Chamber of Commerce as participants in the annual Scarecrow Bash and are currently building their scarecrow display for the contest.

“We are hosting our monthly community dinners with the next one coming up on Oct. 24. It is a great way for the community to come and see what the students have been up to while enjoying a meal prepared by our students and staff,” said Director of Operations Kathryn Trujillo.

The center is also continuing their swimming lessons at the Sand Dunes Swimming Pool every Friday from now until November. “We will go to the pool until just before Thanksgiving break. The program is free and includes lunch. This is a great opportunity for students to not only learn to swim but have fun doing it,” explained Trujillo.

In addition to the swimming lessons, the students are also going to River Valley Inn Nursing Home in Del Norte in the afternoon after lessons to spend time with residents, play games and help around the home. The center will be helping with this year’s Halloween celebrations that River Valley Inn will be hosting from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. Halloween night.

This year’s theme is Granny’s Greet and Treat. Residents will be welcoming children to the center to load up on candy and it is promised to be the sweet spot in Del Norte. “We will have residents pass out candy throughout the home and children will make out like bandits if they come visit us,” said River Valley Inn staff member Annie Baker.

The students with HVCC will continue their life skill classes and regular schedule throughout the fall. HVCC offers homework help and dinner to participating students Monday through Thursday from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. after school. The program is free and open to anyone who wishes to participate.

The Del Norte Chamber also wanted the community to know that the Scarecrow Bash is well underway in Del Norte and the public is invited to begin voting for their favorite displays for both residents and businesses. Voting boxes have been placed throughout town and a map is available on the website at www.delnortechamber.org.

Winners for the Scarecrow Bash will be announced sometime around the end of October.
