RIO GRANDE COUNTY—Cindy Hill has announced that she plans to run for a third term as the Rio Grande County clerk and recorder. She was first elected to the position of clerk in 2010 and has worked in the clerk’s office since 2002.

“There are a lot of projects that I am still working on, as money and time allows. A few years ago, I contracted with a company to scan all of the old books and microfilm cards. Not only did this make it easier for customers to get copies, it also protected the information in the old historical books. This created a back-up so the records are not lost if something were to happen to the building. Now that these records are securely preserved, they need to be indexed for faster retrieval.” The records date back to the 1870s. Hill says that the clerk’s office is the “keeper of the records for Rio Grande County.”

This summer will bring some major changes to the clerk’s office. The Colorado Department of Revenue is launching its DRIVES project which will replace the 1980s computer programming for all motor vehicle transactions. “It will be a much more efficient and up to date system, but a whole new learning curve for me and my staff,” says Hill.

This motor vehicle conversion comes on the heels of the history making process of allowing unaffiliated voters to vote in the primary election. Ms. Hill commented, “We finish up our elections canvass and jump straight into training and implementation of DRIVES the next week. It is going to be a busy summer.” 

Hill, a Republican, is a Valley native and has lived in Rio Grande County for almost 40 years. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration with a minor in accounting from Adams State College. She and her husband, Carl, are active in the community and have been married 38 years. They have one son and four grandchildren.
